How deep should an eyebrow tattoo go?

Eyebrow tattoos, also called Eyebrow PMU (which means Permanent Makeup), shouldn’t go too deep into the skin but not too shallow either.

The color (called pigment) needs to be placed in the perfect spot under the skin, called the papillary layer (first layer of dermis). This is part of the second layer of skin, just under the surface (epidermis). If the color is put too close to the top, it will fade quickly because our skin is always making new cells and pushing old ones away.

But if it’s placed in the right layer, the color will stay even when the skin refreshes itself.

How do we know it’s the right depth?
The top layer of your skin is super thin — like 0.05mm to 1.5mm thick. So the tiny needle used for this tattoo only goes in a little bit — usually around 0.5 to 1mm. And we mostly use just the very tip of the needle.

So, eyebrow PMU isn’t like a regular tattoo. It’s very detailed and careful work. The way the artist moves their hand and how hard they press depends on each person’s skin type.
